After running a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ for about a year, which was rock solid, performance was lacking. Reads over my gig network maxed out at about 28MB/s and writes about 22MB/ s, someone had to be done.  Looking at options I could either buy a new off the shelf NAS such as a Synology, ReadyNas or a small server running FreeNAS.
